Emma Eva Thomas (1890 – 1976)
Emma Eva was born on June 26, 1890 in West Virginia to Joshua Lincoln Thomas and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Wise.
Though she was born in West Virginia, Emma first appears on the 1900 United States Census in West Washington, PA with her family: Joshua, Lizzie, Maggie (13), Ona (15), Eddie (6) and Lottie (3). In 1900, Josh and Lizze had been married for seventeen years and had six children (all living). Joshua was a “laborer”. They owned their own home (mortgaged). Also on this census, Emma’s place of birth is listed as “Virginia”. However, according to other sources, including her obituary, she was born in West Virginia.
On December 24, 1907, at the age of 17 (though the certificate says 16), she married William Oliver Richards in Washington, PA. On the marriage certificate, her father, J. L. Thomas, was required to give his consent since Emma was a minor. William was 22 years of age.
In 1910, Emma and her husband were living in Massillon, Ohio. They renting a home at 355 S. Erie Street with their son Frank, who was 1 year old. William worked as a roller at the sheet mill, and didn’t miss a week of work.
By 1920, the Richards family had moved to Mansfield, Ohio, living at 14 Granite St.
I haven’t found any more records of Emma between the year 1920 and her death in 1976. She died at the age of 85 on January 8 in Mansfield, Ohio.
